Example Character (Mystic Knight III)

Post by Joshua »

(This is what it might look like after the pre-play sessions... or, if people would prefer to just start writing threads like this... Cause, this ended up both hysterical and awesome...)

Real Name: Carson Burke

The current incarnation of the Mystic Knight is a NYC cop. During a shootout in Central Park, his fae heritage awoke allowing him to subdue a criminal with a knife. These powers allowed him to unlock a special safe in his great uncle's house estate and gain the gloves his great uncle (The second mystic knight) used.

After obtaining his gloves, he took on the identity of the Mystic Knight. Fighting crime in his identity that he can't deal with legally.

Powers:
Physical Glamour, the ability to generate solid fae illusions. This power must be channeled though special gloves and grants him the following:
  • Armor: Due to his obsession with powered superheroes, this looks like powered armor. It also enhances his strength, and allows him to fly with what looks like a jet-pack.
  • Resistance to magic: The armor is strongest against mystic and energy attacks. Fire, ice and lasers are particularly ineffective against his armor.
  • Techno-boost: Through touch, the Mystic Knight can imbue any item with a greater technological power.
  • Mystic Cycle: The most common use of his Techo-boost power is to create a motorcycle from any bike that happens to be around.
  • Weapons: Both his armor and his cycle can generate a variety of guns, missiles, etc. These are not physical items, but manifestations of his fae glamour.
Weakness:
Blocking attacks drains him quickly. He is unable to block more than a single bullet with his armor. As a cop though, he wears a bullet-proof vest, which has saved his life more than once when his mystic armor fails.

Publication History:
Golden Age:
Originally created in the 1920's as a villain for "Tales of the Mystic". Horatio Burken was the first incarnation, who attempted to industrialize an elven sanctuary. This character was never named, and was defeated by the now-forgotten Dervish, an elven fencer.

In the 30's, Foster Burke was the first incarnation of this character. (Called Knight Mystic, the Mystic Knight for about 3 issues). His bullet weakness was overplayed and a source of humor. By default, after the first bullet bounced, most bad guys said "Don't waste your ammo! Look at his armor."

In the 1940's, Malcolm Burke (later retconned to be Horatio's grandson) discovered his partial fae heritage and through undisclosed means, forged a pair of gloves to enhance them. this second Mystic Knight , became obsessed with technology while dealing with nazi's in WWII. He was not as effective as you might think, due to his weakness for bullets.

Silver Age:
That version was retired in the 1960's when the comic was acquired by a new publisher. Foster Burke was brought back as the second Mystic Knight (In this cannon he's Malcolm Burke's son). He was locked up by hidden forces who attempted to brainwash him, but he broke free. This incarnation's gloves actually inhibit his powers, without them, they'd attempt to industrial revolutionize the entire world.

In the 1970's the Mystic knight joined up with his cousins, in a TV show called "Mystic Detectives". They were unaware of his origins and solved fae-related mysteries (like a certain crime-fighting dog, no the other one, or other superheros). When that changed animation companies, there was a single pilot made where they were loaded into a spaceship and fired into space. (All copies of said pilot were destroyed, and we shall never speak of it again.)

Bronze Age:
As above. The motorcycle was really big in the 80's.

(An example add-on)

MK #1 (issue 1) in the 80's featured a full-page shot of his armor disintegrating when hit with a burst from an uzi, one bullet bouncing, the other two striking him square in the chest. He's screaming "Oh, come ON!!!!". This was recently turned into an internet meme with captions like "Bullets! My one weakness!" and "The Emperor's New Armor: Believe all you want, facts don't care."

In the 70's, Mystic Knight II was referred to as an "Urban Fae" regularly in the comics. It was implied there were a LOT of them. They played most of the villains in the TV show, although a few of the TV villains were eco-terrorist fae.

An ongoing issue in the recent comics involves Carson explaining to his sergeant why he keeps commandeering kids bicycles.

Because of the confusion between the timelines of the Foster and Malcolm incarnations, almost half of comic sites list them in reverse order. One even lists Foster as MK I and III, with Malcolm as MK II, and Carson as MK IV. Other sites list Horatio as MK I and count from there, others list him as MK 0.
