07.03x: Refuge of Dreams

Post by Rasanam »

((This probably happened on the morning of the first day of the seventh year, before the Jousting Field. Probably.))

Somewhere, far from Amber, a vast* marble game-board floats in the center (to the extent one can measure such things) of a starry void. The board is broken, shattered into three large pieces and innumerable smaller fragments; it depicts cities and towns, forests and oceans, set up with pieces denoting kings and peasants, wizards and warriors; races of all sorts** scattered across a realm of magic. Every now and then one might notice a piece moving on its own - a peasant traveling one village over to get married, or a wizard blipping out of existence in one place to appear again a few feet away.

A single figure isn't scaled down to be part of the game; the man looks at first glance to be a gold-skinned elf, but subtle details (like clawed fingers and toes) show that that's not quite right. Eldritch energies coil around his arms, wrapping into the edge of the marble slab, and he strains as if to lift something impossibly heavy.

"Of course it would jam up now," he mutters, "right when I need the time to react."

Then two things happen at once:
The energies the man was working with release with a snap, flinging him out and away from the game board.
And three people - Rasanam, Lyra, and Alys - appear in a shower of rainbow sparks.

_____
* Roughly football field sized, with individial "game pieces" no more than an inch or two tall - and most are just flat discs with a picture on them.
** Think D&D. There are drow and dragons, gnomes and girallon; all the standard things one might expect.

Lyra barely has a chance to get her bearings and register who the figure by the board is before their explosive arrival sends him flying away. Having recognized him, she knows he's likely fine but can't be certain considering the type of energy involved. "Oh! We're so sorry! Are you Ok?" Lyra calls to the man. "We had no idea that would happen." She moves towards him, compassion overruling caution.

"Lyra?" Nate will ask. "Yeah, it's okay. I haven't seen that since..." He will blink in the closes something of his age can to surprise. "Lyra, what have you been up to?"

"Getting married for one" Lyra replies, glancing back to Rasanam. "And there was an unexpected guest that showed up at the ceremony...He took us to quite the unique Honeymoon location. For some reason I think you can guess where I'm talking about. The issue with the chessboard was his doing as well, fixing the time dilation between here and there while we were gone. Our return seem to have pulled the proverbial wrench from the gears though. We'll have to fix that." Lyra looks back and gestures to Alys. "This is Lady Alystrakos, a friend. All of us have questions and we were hoping you could help answer them."

Alys tilts her head. "I'm not sure I'd assume that - Pattern is a relatively 'recent' creation, and if he's been here since... I wonder if that caused some of this damage, actually? How long have humans existed in this shadow?"

Yeah, that's full blown surprise. he covers it rather well though. The fact he checks the chessboard first is more obvious. "Yes, this is troubling. Well, it's been... nine ages? That I can count."

Rasanam follows Lyra as she rushes forward - and then hangs back once it's clear that assistance isn't needed.

He nods politely in greeting to Nathrezell - and then spends his time looking around the game board for anything noteworthy - starting with checking on how things are going back in his and Lyra's home city of Acra, trying to figure out how long they've been gone, seeing if anything interesting or immediately-problematic has turned up anywhere else...

Rasanam and Lyra's figures have changed dramatically. The pieces are made of highly polished gold and platinum, with about three or four times the detail of any other piece and about six inches in height. Alys's piece is similar... all three of you have more detailed pieces than Nathrezell. Oddly, it shows all of you in your human forms...

"Out of how many? Are we talking dozens, or thousands?" Alys pauses, then shakes her head. "Nevermind. It probably doesn't matter how much - if any - of this place's history got overwritten by Dworkin's creation. A better question might be... what happened to everyone else? No offense intended, but I'm guessing this place wasn't your work alone, or it would be in better repair..."

Rasanam's gaze skips past the figures of himself and Lyra - he sees them, just doesn't really note that the change might be important. ((I'm assuming human form in this case means elf for Rasanam, etc, and was being used as a generic term rather than a specific descriptor.))

"Actually, I can think of one more immediate question: How long have we been gone, and what is local time set to now? We spent about a month in Amber - and I'd rather have a month here before we need to return than, say, just a few minutes." ((Rasanam will, if necessary, provide the date of his and Lyra's departure for Amber.))
