The swarm surges forwards, quickly engulfing Segreth despite his attempts to destroy it - but for every one shard of shadow he manages to crush, a thousand more crawl around him.

For a few seconds, there is nothing but a seething mass of darkness - even the glow of Segreth's eyes is buried in the swarm of shadows Thirwin conjured up.

And then green fire erupts out of the mass, burning away the shadows. Whatever energy Segreth was tapping into has clearly overflowed; jets of green energy flare from between his scales - or, in some cases, simply blast the scales away entirely, revealing nothing but fire and bones beneath.

The burning abomination roars again, sickly flames dripping from its maw, and walks towards Thirwin - right through the barrier that had previously held it at bay.*

_____
* For those with enough spellcraft to identify the barrier Thirwin is using, this is a pretty clear indication: Segreth is gone. Whatever remains is either elemental in nature, or, more likely, undead.

"Hello Tycho," Thirwin will state as the first attack passes through his blurred and slightly displaced image. "A little personal are we with the natives?"

He pulls out his holy symbol which seems to darken and pulls even the light from the sick flames into it. "Kneel," he commands.

If he goes to attack anyone else, the swarm of nightmares will distract him.

The thing continues to try to attack, but Thirwin's power over undead is strong enough to hold it at bay, and in about half a minute the fire burns out and it collapses.

All that's left of Segreth is a pile of bones and burnt scales.

______
As a side note, this particular fight suffers from one slight flaw in the description of it: namely, we haven't had a chance to see Segreth in combat before, and so easily defeating him isn't as impressive as it would be otherwise. Sad, but there simply wasn't a good opportunity. Suffice to say that, without magic to keep him from being able to attack, Segreth would've slaughtered everyone in sight.

He walks over to the crock trainer that Segreth threw at him. "Are you injured?" He asks, offering healing if needed.

"Now, where can Sjach find your chief?"

The croc handler is largely uninjured - and perfectly happy to get in on the ground floor of an incipient change in leadership.
"Grimhew? This way," he grunts, and proceeds south into the middle of the camp.

Most of the other lizardfolk, being less likely to be blamed for Segreth's death if you lose your challenge, are holding further back and watching. The only ones actually following you are the croc handler, and of course Gregor, Vorel, and Epsilon.

*****

Grimhew's tent is, unsurprisingly, the largest one in the camp - only slightly larger than the next one down (probably Segreth's), but at least double the size of any of the rest. It is decorated with a variety of hides, from crocodile scales larger than any on the beast the tribe holds captive, to a grab bag of demon skins, to even a few scraps of lizardfolk or human leathers - presumably from individuals that particularly impressed Grimhew.

"Grimhew inside. Evening meditations," explains your guide.

Sjach, well Thirwin, will listen at the hut, checking the time. "It wouldn't be fair to challenge him if he doesn't have all his spells." He pauses, and holds a stone in his hand. Willing the huge earth elemental to lift up the hut. (without destroying it if possible.) His demeanor remains calm and "polite", "When you have your spells memorized, Sjach would like to talk to you about leadership of the tribe. Sjach already spoke to Segreth."

Unless Grimhew attacks outright, the earth elemental will put the hut back, as Thirwin does not wait for a response.

Time passes.

After several minutes of waiting, Vorel whispers, "Sslezza said to tell you that Grimhew 'suddenly isn't there anymore'."

Thirwin casts sending, taking the time to address it interplanerly, if needed, "Understand Sjach can find you. If Grimhew wishes to beg his life, he will return. The Prophet will come also. You have an hour."

Within the next half-hour it becomes clear what Grimhew did: teleported to a remote chunk of camp where the being referred to as "the prophet" was being held, collected that wretch along with a few of his most loyal (surviving) lieutenants, and departed entirely - plane shifting to Tycho's personal realm.

The rest of the chaos tribe, seeing that their previous leader fled rather than face "Sjach" in combat, is - mostly - willing to accept Thirwin as their new leader. (There are a few challenges from fools with more muscles than brains, but those are easily put down.)

After an hour of waiting, Sjach will once again cast sending, "Know that only your patron keeps you safe. If you ever leave that abode, I will find you. Beg beforehand, and your soul might survive."

He will curse a little, something ancient and infernal, before demanding, "Get the tribe together. Sjach has an announcement. Your leader has conceded, his champion is dead. Sjach will assume leadership once everyone if together. No one is to be killed until I speak."

"Sslezza, if any of the loyal Tycho clerics remain, make sure they get the front row. And point out the ones you think might abandon their faith."

With that, he moves into the largest hut, claiming spoils of battle.
