07.04e: The Wander Inn

Post by Joshua »

(OOC: Okay, I didn't come up with the name. I will not reveal who did, but shame on you.)

The inn is a two-story stone-walled building, with several stained glass windows and a tiled mosaic floor. Accommodations consist of several small rooms with beds and woolen mattresses. A large private bathhouse is available to guests and has a separate selection of menu items for consumption within. Legend tells that the inn was carried brick by brick to this shadow by the patron, an old and white-bearded master of the culinary arts. And alchemy, which is just cooking by another name. For example, the meals served in the bathhouse do not overcook in the steam, and a number of the drinks double as restorative tonics. (Basically shadow magic that mimics the "lifeforce" power word.)

No one has yet to see the bouncer at the tavern portion of the inn. The patrons themselves are almost all willing to step up and defend the place. Some suspect this is because of an alchemical mixture in the food. The truth is a little simpler than that.

The food tastes better to those with a strong sense of honor. While this does attract an honorable crowd, it also finds many patrons who are seeking redemption; those driven from their home shadows by their failure and dishonor. These partake of the foul-tasting food in penance, although sometimes, the flavor changes.

Among those able to enjoy the food, it has the best fish and chips, as well as the best short ribs.

A traveler walks in the door, seeming quite the worse for wear. He wears a long, heavy cloak with a hood over his head and carries a plain walking staff. The cloak seems well made and bits of embroidery show through a light layer of dirt and snow, but any larger pattern is disrupted by large charred sections. The staff thumps against the floor as he walks across the tavern towards a quiet corner. His path takes him past a waitress, to whom he says "Ribs. Ale," in a gruff voice. Few other than the waitress take much note of him as he settles at the table with a quiet sigh.

A trio enters some moments later, the young dark elf in the lead providing a brief commentary to the others. "If you like seafood, I've heard the fish & chips here are the best available. I tried the ribs the last time I was here and they were excellent." She leads their small group to a somewhat private table. (Sufficient warfare likely reveals that, of the seating available at the time, this table is the most advantageous in keeping an eye on the room and its patrons) Lyra leaves her 2 companions to choose seats while she flags down a waitress, surreptitiously using the action to allow her to survey the room briefly. She seems to take no particular notice of the cloaked patron nearby. Having caught the eye of a server, she'll then take a set herself at the table.

Krajk follows Lyra into the inn, scanning the room* as he makes his way to the table his guide/escort has chosen. He flops down into a chair, picked seemingly at random, in a deceptively relaxed sprawl. His body language says (relatively) unthreatening, relaxed, not interested in a fight; a deeper reading (hi warfare) shows the underlying readiness, the fact that one leg is always poised to launch him upwards or backwards, and the liberal scarring on his knuckles that says he needs no weapons to cause mayhem or defend himself if needed.

(*He's not watching anyone in particular, but the seat he picked puts every PC present in his line-of-sight.)

The Raven follows the other two members of his party into the room and takes a seat at the table. His hair is even more unkempt than usual*. The Raven scans the room from his seat, perhaps stopping a moment when he looks over at the wanderer's table.

* - Of course he's human. Ravens don't fish and chips very well.

Food and drinks come out. hooded figure gets a large platter of ribs and ale.

The other table attracts the server, a fairly attractive woman. "What'll you have?" She asks, and will list off entrees if need be.

The figure grunts a thanks to the waitress before settling down to eat at a measured pace, rather than stuffing himself with a large portion. He has slightly adjusted his seat to face more towards the newcomers, although not so much he can't see the rest of the room. His staff leans against the table close at hand.

Krajk flicks a quick glance around the inn's common room, seeing what all everyone else has ordered. He then will politely order a modest portion each of the ribs and the fish and chips. After a moment's pause*, he will also order some ale to wash the food down with.

(*It might be pushing it to guess the proof of the booze with all the other smells going around, but I figure he can tell that it's not overly high which is all he cares about.)

"I would also like fish and chips, and something to drink." Raven mentions to the waitress. At around this time, Raven makes some hand motions under the table. Shortly thereafter, ravens start landing on windowsills near the traveler's table. One at a time, every minute or two, until the total number is five. It's as if they are curious about Benabik, or nosy... it can be hard to read ravens.

The traveller pulls out a pair of half glasses and looks around at the ravens, hand on staff. He seems to focus on one in particular and asks it "Can I help you? I'm fresh out of quests at the moment."
