07.01f: The Seventh Winter (Winter Walk)

Post by Joshua »

Outside the castle is a cool night, the slightest hint of frost can be felt. Darnell is pondering the outside of the castle in his current outfit. With a wide brimmed fop hat. He even manages not to look like a pimp in it. (It's the elven ears.)

After a short while, he sits up, adjusts his dueling rapier, and walks away form teh castle to where an orc is arriving in a carriage. As the door opens he bows. "Greetings Cameron. I'm sorry I missed you last time you were here. I am Darnell, soon to be page of Tir-Na Nog'th."

Cameron hikes the collar of his jacket, a felt cap over his head against the chill, his long copper hair braided and slung around his shoulders a little like a scarf himself. He huffs, his breath steaming slightly in the air, making him look like a mythological beast, which in some worlds he is.

"Good evening, Darnell. I guess.. I have returned home, or whatever closest passes for it. I know I've been away without word. Am I still welcome? I would rather go, but I have come a very long way to end up back where this chapter started." He shivers a little and looks up to the night sky. "Midwinter again. How long have I been gone, do you know?"

"I arrived only a few days after you, if my history serves me correctly. I walked the pattern in March. It is now December. So... from our perspective, it has only been a year." He smiles, and grins. "As for your welcome, Dworkin has been working on a communication method that pierces shadow. He made one for you." Darnell pats you on the back. "So, he must be glad you are here. Your suite at Ht'Gon is still well-prepared. Yes, you are quite welcome indeed."

Cameron's demeanor softens at that and he breathes a sigh of relief. "All of that is good news, at least. I should go to my chambers and freshen up, but I doubt much that was there would fit me anymore. That and being midwinter I suspect... well, there's some sort of gather, isn't there?"

He turns to embrace Darnell briefly, gratitude though not familiarity. "I imagine not much has changed, but you can never tell. I'd rather be underdressed than snub someone by not showing up to their party... I'm glad to know Dworkin doesn't hold any grudges. -I- did for a little while, but that flame has had some time to fade away."

"Well, we should make a quick stop at the guest rooms then. Dworkin always seems to put clothes for new arrivals there." He offers, and will lead you through the main entrance into the waiting room area... "I'm sure we can find you something that will fit and fit the party. Or perhaps Morgana might be willing to conjure something. But, I'm going to guess Dworkin saw you as returning."

The waiting rooms are a quick left once inside the main gates of the castle. Within this suite is a closet with many racks of clothing, sized by pattern-walk. As Darnel suspected, there is a rack for Cameron.

"As for the occasion, this is the new year festival. And christmas, I think... And Dworkin decided to make winter start on the first day of the year, for a reason I'm not entirely sure of. The start, tonights feast, is a welcome to Amber in general. It is followed by a ball at Rebma, a tournament at Ht'Gon, a formal set of parlor games at Tir-Na, then back to the castle for a soirre. Dworkin claims to not have favorites, but he always seems to include Amber twice." Darnell will shrug. "This is over the course of the week, naturally."

Cameron chuckles as he sees the rack of clothes. "He sees to think of everything," he mutters to himself, then shrugs.

"Just my luck I would arrive at the beginning of a social season. Well.. I guess I should pick something..." he starts going through the clothes, selecting things here and there. Having no moesty, he's already undressing to change his clothes.

"Are there servants I can have launder these? They may be in a bit of need..." and then he begins to gather out clothing. He flips the long thick braid until it hangs down past his waist in the rear, then gathers up his clothing, beginning to re-dress.

A pair of low calfskin boots in black with golden accents. Dark red, almost black pants with a strip of gold down the outside. He takes his own tooled leather belt, hammer and pouches still, and straps it around his waist. A grey undershirt in silk, laced only to mid-chest, then a tunic of dark purple over that, leaving his arms bared. He takes his vest, and pulls a golden chain from one of his pouches, with a small crystal-and-gear logo, a tradeguild mark from home, and fastens it. His greatcoat will come as well, though he intends to not wear it past the entry, and then a large black hat with a single red-tipped purple feather, not quite peacock, from the golden hatband. He sizes himself up in the mirror.

"Be honest... does this make me look like a clown?"

"No, that looks fine. Although, I'd lose the feather. It doesn't work with the tool belt." Darnell will smile. "It is a busy outfit, but you pull it off well." Darnell will tug a bell-line, "The servants should have them cleaned and in your suite by morning." He offers Cameron his arm. "We had best get to the feast. Don't want them to get into too much trouble before we arrive." He won't head off immediately though. "Are you sure you're okay with this? I could get you a proper escort."

Cameron considers for a moment, then plucks the feather free and tucks it back in the rack. "I've been away for a year... or more. I think that just putting in an appearance will be enough without going with a complete escort. I'm curious to see who even remembers me." He takes Darnell's arm with a smile ,then pauses, fishing through a pouch for.. well, it's a watch, but on a thick bracer-like armband. Tooled expertly, it's a fine bronze watch with a slice of crystal for the face. "If I'm going to go to a social event, I should wear my best work, no? We should go - I can use a drink something fierce. And I suspect I'll need one after the first ten minutes..."
