The elemental may be well-armored - but it's not very good at avoiding or deflecting blows. Negative energy arcs and crackles harmlessly across its form from multiple rapid strikes. Still, with the metaphysical damage completely nullified, keeping the elemental healed is a relatively simple task.

Several minutes go by. Then the elemental turns around and reports, "Target dissipated."

Thirwin gestures for the elemental to step aside, and continues down the corridor. Pausing long enough to make sure the displacer isn't getting back up anytime soon, he directs the earth elemental to 'scout' ahead and walks further into the crypt.

There is no sign of any remains. Whether this is a good sign or not, is not entirely clear.

Some distance down the corridor, you reach the expected central intersection of the crypt. It's clear that the creature spent most of its time here; the stone floor is worn down several feet relative to its original level. You can actually tell this because there's a ten foot diameter circle of mostly untouched floor around a pedestal - the area contains more of the patterned marks you saw above, but hasn't been completely ripped to shreds.

On the pedestal is a small bag, its mouth tied shut. The bag is magical; weak conjuration.

Thirwin will check traps on the pedestal, and then finding none, pick up the bag and examine it. He'll also check for writings and more on the pedestal, just in case there's notes as to what it is. If nothing screams instant death, he'll also open the bag.

The only things that might be writings are all those scratch marks in the floor. And, then again, they might not.

Nothing screams instant death, and opening the bag does not change that situation, either.

He reaches into the bag, searching for what's inside.

There is, indeed, something in the bag. It's a hard-edged item of some sort, all angles and planes, and warm to the touch.

Thirwin pulls it out.

The item, once removed from storage, blazes with light as if you had pulled the sun itself down to earth. Oddly, it's not blindingly bright; perhaps that's some small facet of its magic. (Speaking of which, your detect magic spell just overloaded and shut down.)

It's a six pointed star, decorated with a feline face: the symbol of the sun lion, a long-dead god from a prior age.

Oh, and your hand is on fire. It doesn't hurt - yet, at least - but it certainly doesn't look healthy.

Thirwin will wrap it up in a thick cloth, and look around a little more. The displacer beast was way too strong and powerful. He takes time searching through the tomb for what it may have been, what might have spawned it, and what happened to the body.
