The thing shrugs. "Follow the symbol."

And it dissolves back into the darkness, and is gone.

Thirwin has some choice words. Mostly a spell to decipher the lines and runes on the walls. He takes some time to see what he can find.

Much of it is simply insane, but it's interesting to see some of the first stages of undeath-induced insaniy.

For example, at one point it had the presence of mind to realize that it was going insane - this resulted in the "danger" markings up on the first floor.

There are also some indications that the Sun Lion didn't actually die immediately, or perhaps got raised as undead himself. At the very least, the creature thought it retained some level of divine contact past the end of the cataclysm, albeit "shrouded in ever-deeper darkness," and tapering off as the thing's madness progressed.

On the other hand, the "took a while to finish dying" hypothesis has some definite evidence in favor of it:
You know from your own studies of history that the demon lord that killed the Sun Lion, a creature named Terobog, was also mortally wounded in the fight - and it took another thousand years for Terobog to actually die. And even then, what finally finished him off was the demon lord Nathrezell, not his injuries; left alone, he might have lingered on for another thousand years.

Thirwin laughs a little at that, "Well, good to know that you take care of killers also." He ponders that for a while, "Probably just because he was weak, you couldn't possibly have avenged..." The idea trails off, likely impossible.

When he's done, Thirwin calls out, "I will find the temple, it is a deal."

Thinking, he orders the specter, "Keep him sane and talk to him. Protect him if need be."

Then he leaves, taking the spellbook, the amulet in the pouch, and a few of the other items to sell and perhaps try to find someone to help.

It takes relatively little travel time to find a decent site to camp for the rest of the night.

Morning comes soon enough, the light of dawn shouldering its way up over the hills to the east.

As the light rains down upon him, Thirwin will take out the amulet, and examine it in the fullness of light. he will also cast legend lore on it, as well as identify. (in that order)

Legend lore returns:
"If the Sun Lion is to see the light of day again, seven* keys must be found. This device, the Last Light of the Setting Sun, is one of them. Until that time, it remains a powerful weapon against the darkness, for no figment or phantasm can stand against its light."

Identify merely tells you that the item is an artifact, and beyond the power of identify to provide useful information.

However, there are some abilities of the artifact that you can discern, simply from holding it: it grants you access to a set of powers associated with the sun - fire, searing light, and the power to destroy undead creatures outright.

It also isn't trying to set you on fire right now.

_____
* Seven is an auspicious number, common in legend and prophecy. Seven tasks the hero must perform to prove his worth. Seven sages. Seven magical colors. Seven days in a week. Seven kinds of dragons. Seven Titans**... the list goes on.

_____
** Unless you talk to one of those heretics who say there are only six Titans, of course. There were, in fact, seven primal gods - but one of them was wise enough to refrain from creating a force of unstoppable destruction. A seventh Titan, were one to be created, would be more powerful than the other six combined, and would sunder the world by the very weight of its existance. Or at least, that's the most common version of this particular heresy.***

_____
*** This is, of course, a completely irrelevant tangent, with no bearing on the game whatsoever. Really. I swear.

Thirwin holds aloft the sun amulet and reverently says, "You know, I'm not even looking to help you, just you're a way to point to something older." Then sighs, "6 more keys, I really hope they're not needed to put you guys at rest."

Replacing the amulet in the bag, he heads to Dornsby. He then sells the magic sword, and a few other things, and buys a hat. he keeps the spellbook for perhaps a bribe to a mage.

Dornsby is abuzz with news of recent events. The Duke is dead! The Duke has been kidnapped by Tavinoy forces! No, the Tavinoy were driven off by the same adventurers who killed the were-rats! And on, and on...

It's not too difficult to piece together a few things for certain: The were-rats that had been plaguing Dornsby for months have been neutralized - killed, cleansed, deported, or otherwise removed. A Tavinoy force attacked the Duke's mansion after some diplomatic effort went sour, but were either driven off, or lost interest and left of their own accord. The Duke has not been seen since that attack, nor has the visiting noblewoman Lauren Greywind, or the adventurer Twill.

The adventurers currently in the city are: Aurora (and her pet gnoll), Luma, and Stewart.

Most of the city is not really aware of Stewart's presence, though. To them, he's just some guy who tags along with Luma - he doesn't look very impressive, after all, and he hasn't done anything to (publicly) demonstrate his power.

All three of them (excluding the gnoll) were last seen headed for the remains of the Duke's mansion, presumably to talk to Mr. Sketton. Or you could wait for Aurora at the Sleeping Chimera Inn, or for Luma and Stewart at the Prancing Cat Inn.

Thirwin will head towards the Duke's Mansion to see who might be there. He'll appear relatively normal, perhaps some random squire.
