Twill is a male Hrassa (catperson) of medium height and wiry build. He has bluish-gray fur and a triangular head reminiscent of a Siamese cat. He typically dresses in black boots and trousers, a very ruffled long-sleeved cream-colored blouse, a purple coat, and a cavalier hat adorned with a peacock feather.

Twill is a self-described gentleman adventurer, a dashing outlaw loved by the weak and hated by the powerful. He has risen from obscurity to being a popular legend; it is said that he leaves a trail of collapsed kingdoms, humiliated landlords, and broken heats everywhere he passes, that no injustice is too small or too large for him to fight, and that he has never taken a life. All exaggeration, of course, but does have a very real tendency to get in trouble on others' behalf, motivated primarily by his sense of fairness and thirst for adventure. He loves nothing more than to turn a cruel tyrant into a laughingstock, then wander off while the revolution begins behind him.

Although he is a primarily urban hero, fighting political injustice rather than delving into caves to fight monsters, Twill is at heart a forest nomad. He stays nowhere very long, and high on the list of his multiple talents is woodsmanship. He prefers to live alone, constantly moving, rather than permanently attaching to a place or a travel companion, except of course for his constant partner, the Tsarina Ekaterina Alexandrovna Romanova D'vai, an apparently unremarkable capuchin monkey. She generally wears a pastel blue or pink bonnet and a vest, and rides on Twill's shoulder or hat.

Twill has a strong sense of fairness and morality, and believes deeply that all people (which he defines roughly as "things that can talk") deserve life and an opportunity to better themselves. He is particularly opposed to the use of power to control others, whether it takes the form of political tyranny, economic coercion, or evil wizards. However, he is not truly a political radical; he is not philosophically inclined or given to devising manifestoes. He simply sees a situation that seems unfair, and takes it upon himself to rectify it.

He is, after years of experience and training, well equipped to do so. He is a master of the art of la verdadera destreza, and uses it extensively in duels and against weaker opponents; when fighting seriously, however, he switches to a Hrassan style in which the off-hand claw is treated as a second weapon. It is widely rumored that his rapier is enchanted to be not only supernaturally sharp and accurate (as the best swords usually are), but also to be incapable of killing.

Twill has a number of notably eccentric habits. His typical introduction, for example, is "Allow me to present Her Imperial Majesty the Tsarina Ekaterina Alexandrovna Romanova D'vai and her humble servant, Twill." He also often asks the monkey, whom he refers to as "Kitty", for advice. When pressed on this, he usually responds, "She has never so far answered in a language I recognize, but one may always hope, no?" Some say this is an act he puts on to encourage his opponents to underestimate him; others say he is simply mad. He also, unusually for an adventurer of his abilities, disdains the use of flashy or obvious magic, as it is "cheating".

Twill has little interest in religion. He is a follower of Coyote, primarily because Coyote gets all the best stories, and because it doesn't requite Twill to do anything he wasn't already doing. He cares not at all about the beliefs and motivations behind others' actions; as far as he's concerned, people should treat one another like people, and beyond that they may do, say, or think whatever they please.
