Random Questions

Post by Joshua »

So, A few people have asked me about healing or "how does this work?" or whatnot. So, post random questions about the rules or setting here. I'll respond, then slowly roll the answers into the rules forum.

Silly question 1: Does Amber have indoor plumbing?
A: Yes. Within the Castle itself, most apartment/suites are equipped with basic wash and bathroom facilities. The more extensive ones do have hot and cold fresh water with optional salt water for filling the tub with. Shower fixtures are rudimentary and fresh-water only.

Within the City itself, there are mostly public baths, although some nobles and merchant buildings have basic indoor plumbing. (It increases productivity...) Most indoor plumbing in the city is done with conjuration / enchantment, thus is expensive and requires maintenance.

Rebma has extensive enchantments out the wazoo. Compared to the effort to make water breathing areas underwater, enchantments for magic-enhanced plumbing are not a big deal. Plus, disposal is much more important when you're swimming in it. The newer areas do not, but it's much more common among the affluent fishermen.

Ht'Gon depends on where you are. The dwarven area: yes. the Goblin area, not so much. Morgana does what she can to keep the place livable, and there are regular guests, so even the goblin areas are kept clean.

Now that it's been properly disposed of, just how dangerous was the rampaging corsage? What would have been the end result of, say, corsage vs. Amber Castle Guard (both any single guard, and the guards as a whole)? How would it have fared if released into the city (without interference from Amberites or castle guard)? Would it have been more or less of a threat to ordinary (stats at chaos or below) people out in shadow? To an Amberite, armed with Pattern?

And, if someone wanted a tamed & loyal rose of similar power, how would they go about statting one?
What if they just wanted a mostly-domesticated version that was only "loyal" to the degree of staying more or less where it was planted?

The rose was a 10 point 'creature'.

In amber:
4: Immense Vitality
2: Amber Stamina
1: Death Throes (Add-on for Stamina)
1: Extra Hard
1: Resistant to Normal Damage (too small)
1: Self Healing

Outside Amber: (Full bush)
4: Immense Vitality
4: Tireless Supernatural Stamina
2: Never stops (Add-on for Stamina, cutting off parts of the plant results in the above)
2: Double Damage (Impossibly hard thorns don't function in Amber physics)
2: Resistant to Firearms
2: Rapid Healing
4: Psychic Barrier (A hive-mind of willful stalks.)

For loyalty, these don't have "mobility" so unless you cut stuff off, they can only go where their vines are planted. You can get it for 0... Loyalty would require "Psychic Sensitivity" as the plant is normally unintelligent and just lashes out at literally everything.

What is the timing of this? I'd add "especially for those who haven't walked the Pattern yet" except we've got a handful of those already existing which does technically set precedence. Does having a trump card mean there's an expectation of walking the Pattern, or just that one is going to become and important and semi-permanent part of Amber? If it's the former, there is a certain were-shark who is going to be extremely unhappy with... um... pretty much anyone with a trump deck who'd encountered him at some point. If it's the latter, he's just going to be rather grumpy and take that much longer to actually start even thinking about trusting anyone sporting a deck. :-P

I would guess that it's more or less instantaneous - Dworkin used some power or another that let him know all 72 people that would be Princes of Amber (minus any and all relevant places), and made a portrait of each of them. Likely using some kind of Scry of some sort, really, since he's more-or-less still handpicking all of them. It's just that now you have a name and face to put to one of the people on the cards.

My understanding of it is:

A card that's "been there all along" is for someone like Benabik, who walked the pattern a while ago and then vanished into shadow - the player may have just joined the game, but the character has existed and been known for a while.

A card with a suit is for someone who either has walked the pattern, or is expected to walk the pattern... at some point.
A face card is only for someone who has walked the pattern - or who is expected to do so very soon.

The high arcana (trump cards with no suit) are for those who are important to the courts, but either haven't walked the pattern, or aren't affiliated with a specific court, or both.

And timing of new cards is based on when Dworkin gets to it - Rasanam, at least, expects that any new cards will simply appear in existing decks once Dworkin has made them, but there's no guarantee that it'll be handled that way.

Your'e both right.

For a character that "has been there all along", his card was retconned into your deck. Having been there since the character walked the pattern. (again, like Benabik.) If a new player wants to have walked the pattern in the 5th year of amber, then his card was in your deck when you first got it.

For characters who later walk the pattern, Dworkin does have a method of adding cards to the decks without warning. So, for those, you'll shuffle through your deck and note there's an extra card you didn't put there. Krajk is likely to get this kind of card. For those, I will put an "added at this time" note in their card description.
