You make it about seven steps before a creature comes barrelling toward you down the hallway, It seems to pull the darkness with it as it comes, a twisting blur of shadows so tangled that you are unable to catch more than a few glimpses of a withered feline shape, even as its claws scrape across your armor and its jaws snap shut on the far side of your shield.

Thirwin displays his symbol, invoking dark names and demanding obedience before the might of the Master he serves.

The thing cowers back; obedience is apparently a bit too much to ask for. Empty eye-sockets glare hatefully at you, but it does not have the strength to strike against one who wields such powers.

Its form is still wreathed in shadows, though now that it is stationary, there is some chance of figuring out what sort of creature it was.

Thirwin takes a while to examine the creature, prodding it with the sword he picked up lightly. Holding onto the stone in his pocket, he examines the creature for almost a full minute. Timing the earth elementals first appearance and attack to be as the rebuke wears off.

A minute's worth of poking reveals that the thing was a displacer beast while alive - though the fleshy tentacles seem to have decayed entirely, it is a six legged feline, of roughly the right size and shape. And, most notably, it seems to still retain its ability to not be where it appears to be. The shadows coiled around it don't help, either.

Your summoned earth elemental fills the corridor - overfills it, in fact, its form merging seemlessly into the tortured rock around it. A mighty fist slams downwards, seemingly from out of the ceiling itself... and whooshes unimpeded through the twisting shadows, to merge again into the stone floor.

The beast, now once again free to act, renews its assault on you; ignoring the elemental completely. One of its claws actually connects, this time. The physical injury is relatively minor, but you can feel it tearing directly at your life-force. No wonder so many prior adventurers fell to this thing - someone not so well armored as you are could easily have died from its initial attack.

Thirwin says a few words to the elemental to watch itself. Then casts a few divine gestures, and a pillar of flame and darkness erupts around the beast.

The creature hunkers down, simply enduring the blast rather than trying to dodge. Then it hisses angrily - the first sound it's made - and resumes its assault, completely undeterred by the damage it just took. For the moment, you're able to prevent it from landing further attacks, though.

Thirwin will back off and let the elemental have a chance to interpose. He will then cast restoration to remove the soul damage done.

The elemental is quite capable of getting inbetween you and the creature, gliding through the stone floor and then simply rising back up to fill the hallway. Presumably it's still attacking, too, though several feet of earth elemental does somewhat muffle the sounds of combat...

Thirwin watches the back of the elemental, figuring either it will devastate the undead or succumb to it's negative energy. He casts death ward on the elemental, and readies his healing touch, just in case the elemental needs it, and watches.
