Ametrine notices the flags, and comes rushing over to the Eternal Butler. "I'm back! Hurry up and fire so I can go back out there again, it was fun!"

One of the serpents, apparently enraged by Ametrine's breath, goes on a berserk rampage amongst the orcs. The one he was fighting spends a few fleeting moments cowering - just long enough for the ballista bolt to strike.

The resulting massive explosion slays several orcs outright, and leaves others in its blast radius badly wounded. Apparently cold iron ballista bolts do not react well with heavily injured serpents...

"Yay!" Ametrine flies back to find a second serpent to rapidly click on. "Flag me when the next bolt is ready!"

Willoughby is immensely gladdened by the explosion. They aren't invulnerable, he thinks. But now the serpents know that they're in range. The next shot won't be so easy, but the demons have little in the way of cover...

"We can't allow the semaphore to reveal the timing of our attacks, Ametrine. Another use, perhaps two, and we will need to change tactics."

The rod goes "click-fzzt," and does nothing. Apparently it's run out of power for today.

Ametrine pouts, and gives his claws an experimental swipe at the serpents.

Ametrine's claws, while perhaps less damaging than the rod was, certainly generate injuries of a more visible nature. The two remaining serpents (having come to their senses again) abandon their attempts at spellcasting and charge towards the fort - ignoring Ametrine completely.

The orcs follow, with exultant war cries. Nevermind that it's not at all clear how they plan on breaching the walls; they're finally getting to charge into battle!

Behind the charging orcish horde, a portal opens. The first person through is a woman in red robes with a staff topped by the symbol of a burning eye. Following her are a few more (presumably) clerics, and an entire division of the Catian army.

The orcs and serpents are oblivious for the first few seconds - until the woman in read calls out, "Vile abominations! Corruptions of the purity of flame! By the power of Illara, begone!"

The serpents look around in terror, but it's far too late. There is a flash of red light from the woman's staff, and the serpents simply fade away.

All that's left is to mop up the orcs...

Ametrine watches in awe and looks down at the nonfunctional wand in his hands. After he's finished mopping up the orcs, he'll have to ask which butler the woman in red robes got her wand from.

Killing off the remaining orcs is more tedious than it is dangerous - at least for Ametrine; some of the actual human soldiers do manage to get themselves hurt. Not permanently, though; there are definite advantages to having powerful clerics on your side.

The woman in red laughs at Ametrine's question. "My staff is nothing more than a focus. The power is that Illara, the Lady of Fire."

Also, continued from Chapter XIV.
