Teen Justice Comic (Game Recap)

Post by Joshua »

Issue 1: First Chance

Prelude:
April 15th, 2017-
Misfire (Manhatten, 10:14am): Humor was about to blow up a neo-nazi meeting somewhere. Major Justice! and Misfire arrived on the scene. Misfire snuck in, and jammed the deadman's switch on the detonator. When the jewish host started laughing (expelling Humor) about "He's letting me decide if you live or die and your group killed my son last year." Misfire was able to talk him down.

Soul Ring (Jersey City, 11:51am): A CEO possessed by Humor holds up his own bank, laughing about how the CEO is doing this openly for once. Soul Ring arrives, and uses his force powers to slap the CEO around. The CEO finds the use of a force-backhand funny for some reason, which expels Humor.

Xark (Brooklyn, 3:32pm): Striker Zero and Xark capture one of Humor's hosts. (Astute readers are reminded that Humor can only possess one host at a time.) Who claims he should be let go because there's three nearby bombs that will go off if he's not released. After some back and forth between Humor and Striker, Xark mimic's Humor's empathy and 'sense of humor'. He says something to make the host laugh, and the host apologizes and tells the duo the location of the bombs.

Mixcoatl (Manhatten, 4:00pm): Mixcoatl and his mentor Apollo are taking in the start of an open mic night at a comedy club before the later meeting. Humor is the first taker, stating that he's sick of people telling him his jokes aren't funny. Oh, and all the doors exiting the room are bombed, so, there's no point in trying to flee. As Humor begins a 15 minute comedy routine (which was actually very good), Mixcoatl hides in the shadows and disarms the bombs. He ends with storming out of the room at the end of the routine. The host laughs at Humor getting played.

Main:
Xark, Mixcoatl, Soul Ring, Misfire (United League of Parahumans, 6:00pm): The induction ceremony of new heroes. About half-way through, Soul Ring realizes they're just being inducted into the League, but not Justice United. After registering, he storms off, angry.

While Mixcoatl and Apollo argue over the betrayal of trust, a call comes in about an explosion at Project CRISIS. Unfortunately, another call comes in about (generic super mega-crisis #1) which is 'all hands on deck' for Justice United, so the sidekicks are ordered to sit tight.

Just before they decide to leave, Jacob arrives and asks about being a superhero. The son of Oberon and Titiana, he is given permission to go along.

Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Misfire (Project CRISIS NYC HQ, 7:12pm): Fire and police are putting out secondary fires and evacuating the building. They let the recognizable heroes investigate. A second explosion rocks the building and the group finds a dozen or so rat-monkeys attempting to build random things in one of the labs. The monkrats manage to build a third bomb, but Jacob orders the bomb not to explode.

A short fight and a little investigation later, the team heads down a elevator to find the main research facility.

In the first room investigated, they find some notes about some experiments and lots of evidence of Project Synthesis, an attempt to mix dna of various sources. The notes referenced only one 'viable' experiment. The room also had a lot of failed and aborted animal clone blending. Jacob set them on fire.

They ran to a second room that contained said viable experiment. It contained several human clones in various states of growth. Syn-60 a blend of Angel and Shift was the 'viable' one. Nearby was Syn-61 a blend of Angel and Shift labelled as "Warning: Unspecified Mutation". Attempting to call outside, Jacob changed the ceiling to a transparent substance, dropping debris on the cryostorage, freeing Syn-60 and Syn-61. This ended up in a short battle with the telekinetic Syn-61 and the Ape-Weasel security guards.

As Syn-61 built up to a telekinetic explosion, the heroes fled outside and called in Justice United.

Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Syn-60, Misfire (Project CRISIS NYC HQ, 9:47pm): Striker Zero debriefed the heroes. Further investigation and prosecution of CRISIS would occur. There was talk of helping the new heroes set up their own team and what to do about Syn-60. Including a request not to refer to him as Angel and Shift's child until the parents (who had a really bad breakup recently) could come to terms with things.

Issue 2: Dead Base

Prelude:
April 17th, 2017-
Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Syn-60 (United League of Parahumans Break Room, 10:14am): After Syn-60 had a battery of tests run, the group is talking in the break room. Xark is experimenting with powers from other people, and Mixcoatl is explaining how to be a superhero to both Jacob and Syn-60 (who needs a new codename). After Xark manages to destroy a couch, Destructo gets into a small argument with them and storms off. On the plus side, this attracts the attention of Not-germanic mage-in-training Magic Lad.

As the group talks, Jacob starts to experiment with preventing Mixcoatl from seeing or preventing anyone but Mixcoatl from seeing. This, in turn, causes them to notice a disconnected warning light going off. Powered by a strange mystic energy, the light is linked to an abandoned closet-teleporter, which has mysteriously started working again. After poking it a little, the group decides to investigate. (Cause, f-da-police.)

Main:
Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Syn-60, Magic Lad (Defunct Justice United Base, 11:06 am): The abandoned JU base in the North Pacific is set inside of a dormant volcano. In Justice Nocturne (in the 70's), it was destroyed by meteor bombardment by Dr. Mann. Unfortunately, someone had animated the base using space necromancy. The group fought a small contingent of defense droids, the basic walker model. Syn-60 was mistaken for Shift by the base's security systems.

Mixcoatl (Defunct Justice United Base, 11:08 am): Leaving Syn-60 to hack the base computer, Mixcoatl scouts ahead. Finding the roach: Tzzkk (Tsi-KK) in charge of the command center and freaking out about 'Shift' invading the base, he doubles back.

Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Syn-60, Magic Lad (Defunct Justice United Base, 11:12 am): With a hacked map of the base-layout and some superpowered energy control from Jacob, the group manages to sneak through some ventilation shafts to the central control room. Battle ensues.

Xark, once again, mimics Mixcoatl's arrows and the two of them start blasting at Tzzkk. Jacob assumes the form of a giant demon with a chain-whip and goes toe to toe with the roach-swarm. Magic Lad starts blasting minions and hitting Tzzkk with fire. Syn-60 set the roach up for Jacob to take him down. And Xark and Mixcoatl encase him in tangle-foam.

Thankfully, with the necromancer taken out, the ritual animating the base fails, and all security stops. As does the teleporter and most base functions. the meteor holes in the walls and ceiling return.

Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Syn-60, Magic Lad (Defunct Justice United Base, 11:35 am): Realizing the group is stuck there. Jacob start repairing the walls and Syn-60 goes to fix some of the base. When Xark demands food, Jacob summons a sand-elemental to fish, inadvertently terrorizing the nearby fishing town. Justice United shows up shortly thereafter.

Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Syn-60, Magic Lad (Defunct Justice United Base, Noon): A few conversations happen, and ultimately the team is allowed to keep the base, if they wish to apply for full superteam status. The specifics are likely going to be ironed out later. In particular, Angel agrees to help Syn-60 fix the teleporters, although she's still a little emotional about suddenly having a teenage son to deal with.

Issue 3: Invasion, Flat-Out

Prelude:
A short montage of repairs done to the base. Syn-60 rebuilding the electronics and Jacob fixing the giant, gaping, meteor-holes. Repeated calls for Syn-60 to retrofit parts of the base built into him gaining the nickname Retrofit.
There was also a bit of a montage of the paperwork of setting up the group as a superteam, with Striker Zero as a temporary patron.

April 29th, 2017-
Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Retrofit, Misfire, Magic Lad (Newly Recommissioned Teen Justice Base, Training Room, 8:14am HDT (1:14pm EDT)): The group is having a training session under the tutelage of Striker Zero, attempting to get them working more as a group. During a break, Retrofit asks Striker about the reason for creating him. Striker attempted to answer honestly, that it was a test to see if a person could have two metagenes, but... that there might have been a deeper motive not contained in the files.

During this, Jacob received a phone call about his sister, Karen from the NY Parahuman Task-Force. Karen had been incapacitated while investigating a possible landed spaceship. Jacob asked for the files and grabbed the group to head out.

Main:
Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Retrofit, Misfire, Magic Lad (Bellevue Hospital Center, 2:01 pm EDT): The NYC police liaison explained that several citizens were also kidnapped, but all of the police team had been recovered. After a talk with Karen (Jacob's sister), the group heads to a local construction area where the PTF was attacked.

Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Retrofit, Misfire, Magic Lad (Brooklyn Construction Site, 2:33 pm EDT): Mixcoatl figures out that a few of the inanimate objects have heat signatures, and Jacob turns into a phoenix and flies over them. One of the metal trash barrels starts inching away. Jacob managed to convince the barrel to talk. It (he?) shifts back into a 4-foot lizard alien, holding a stun baton in his tail-hand. He mostly quotes Star Wars, stating that his scouts are unarmed and having a diplomatic mission. He attacks Jacob as a distraction, but is quickly immobilized by Mixcoatl and Xark.

Some of the remaining aliens use the battle as a distraction to 2-D slide toward their camouflaged (shapeshifting) space ship. As it prepares to take off, Jacob creates a barrier in front of it, that the two dimensional space-ship climbs up before becoming 3 dimensional again, upside-down... and crashing to the ground.

The two dozen aliens surrender, but about half of them are holograms... The others have fled into the city and vanished. The kidnapped citizens are found in a few stasis pods and are saved with only minor injuries. (The ship did have a fairly bad crash.)

The ship is flown to the NYPD impound yard by Jacob's dragon form.

Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Retrofit, Misfire, Magic Lad (NYPD Alien Detention, 4:57 pm EDT): The aliens (Tautlorn) are charged with "Conspiracy to Invade" and confess they are the initial scouts of a large invasion force. There is debate if they will accept an offer of sanctuary for switching sides. This is left up in the air.

Jacob presents Misfire with two of the confiscated alien stun batons. And "I even made them red and blue to match your costume." Misfire's face was an amazing mix of joy and frustration.

Epilogue:
May 7th, 2017-
Jacob, Retrofit (Teen Justice Hanger, 10:02am HDT (3:02pm EDT)): Jacob arrives at the base with the spaceship. Due to it's teleporting nature and the Cygnus vs. Negatron ruling, temporary custody of the shape-ship has been awarded to the super-team. Retrofit starts taking a look at it.

(OOC: Unless you guys want to do something for May 5th... Which is a Friday this year.)

Issue 4: Sentience
Mega-Sized Double-Issue! 96 pages!

Prelude:
May 5th, 2017
Another short montage about getting together a small party. Mixcoatl learns that asking a dog to find 'hot bitches' is a bad idea. Ultimately, bits of info about how old Jacob is, and how little Xark understands about humans come out and the party is fairly low-key.

Main:
May 8th, 2017
Jacob, Mixcoatl (New Millennium High School, NYC, 8:15am EDT): Doom and gloom at having to go to a new school. Ironic talk of hidden dangers.

Retrofit (Teen Justice Base, Hanger, 4:29am HDT (9:29am EDT)): Retrofit is working early morning on the space-ship that was dropped off. A shadow mysteriously jumps him, fade to black.

Retrofit, Magic Lad (Teen Justice Base, Hanger, 5:45am HDT (10:45am EDT)): Retrofit calls Magic Lad for help moving something in the hanger, as the others are mostly in school. One of the base robots jumps Magic Lad, fade to black.

Retrofit, Misfire (Teen Justice Base, Hanger, 6:58am HDT (11:58am EDT)): Retrofit calls Misfire for help moving something in the hanger, as the others are mostly in school. Once Misfire almost gets in the space ship, several of the base robots jump him and Retrofit sets off a gas grenade. Luckily, Misfire manages to dodge the attacks, the gas and the stun beams and flee while calling in reinforcements.

Jacob, Mixcoatl (New Millennium High School, NYC, 12:07pm EDT): Jacob gets a call in class. Due to having a public connection with the NYPD meta-human task force, he asks for a hall-pass and is granted one. Mixcoatl's call happens in gym, and he ducks out during a team sport. They meet up in the field, with some bows... After a little discussion, Jacob turns into a genie and teleports the two of them to the base.

Retrofit, Xark (Teen Justice Base, Xark's Quarters, 7:15am HDT (12:15pm EDT)): Xark is spending time with his rescue-cat, Pixie when he's interrupted by Retrofit. Unfortunately, the gunfire sort of tips Xark off, and when Xark attempts to copy Retrofit's powers to deal with it, he immediately recognizes the shapeshifting android for what it is.
Everyone else shows up and the fake Retrofit flees.

Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Retrofit, Misfire, Magic Lad (Teen Justice Base, Hanger, 7:32am HDT (12:32pm EDT)):
The group (Xark, Jacob, Misfire, Mixcoatl) get to the hanger without issue...
Jacob assumes a iron golem(?) form and hold off the hulk-buster robots on top of the space ship. Using his matter control, he manages to get a shield between himself and the ships turbo-blasters.
Mixcoatl and Xark (I think) entered the space-ship to confront the bio-android. While Jacob was trashing the top of the ship, Retrofit managed to gain enough control to let the heroes break him out of the pod. Retrofit then broke Magic Lad out of confinement.
Between Retrofit and Jacob, the main power to the ship was cut and the AI begged for it's existence.
"No kill I?"
It offers help in properly disconnecting it from the ship if it can live. That is accepted.

Epilogue:
Xark, Jacob, Mixcoatl, Retrofit, Misfire, Magic Lad (Teen Justice Base, Alien Spaceship, 7:56am HDT (12:56pm EDT)): The team discusses sentience.
Magic Lad verifies that A.C.E. (the AI) has a soul using magic. (And also Retrofit has one...)

There's a long discussion of what to do with the AI Including a full double-page spread of:
(still editing this, also this is a condensed mix of what we sort-of remember was said, let me know if you want your speech bubble edited.)
Magic Lad asks, "Well, are artificial beings people?"
Mixcoatl saying "Yes."
Misfire says "I suppose."
Xark says, "No."
Jacob says "Well, fae claim that humans are just organic creations for use as slaves, so a clone is no more or less a person than that."
Retrofit looking on, silent and showing concern. His thoughts say 'Is this what they think of me?'

Eventually, the AI was put into a harmless body (like a roomba, only with voice and basic sensory input).

Issue 5: The Soul of Justice
Alternate title: A Sidekick of Justice

Prelude:
May 9th, 2017
Jacob (NYPD Detention Facility, 8:15am EDT): Drops A.C.E. off at the facility. There is a short discussion of remanding the AI to the team for custody and concern that the other aliens would also request such an arrangement. Thy are explicitly requesting asylum for assistance stopping the coming invasion.
Soul Ring briefly is seen watching the conversation.

Misfire, Retrofit (Teen Justice Base, Living Quarters, 12:38pm HDT (5:38pm EDT)): Recieves a summons to court to testify in defense of Pascal Rabinowitz (The jewish host of Humor who almost blew up the neo-nazis.) Retrofit decides to go and talk to Plasto. The others decide to tag along.

Main:
May 10th, 2017

(skeleton so far... do I have the order right? PM or message me with corrections. Also, some of teh scenes were intentionally reordered to make a ore interesting back and forth.)
Retrofit talks to Plasto.
Plasto is pressing charges against a gang who is using the "he's not a real person, and has no legal standing" defense. This is Plasto's first time facing such accusations without his creator.

Xark runs afoul of the dog-catcher in a humor montage.

Misfire is meditating to calm himself and remember the events, but keeps almost losing his composure as his damaged soul prevents the technique from properly working.
He detects a connection to the prosecuting attorney (Dante Lancaster) and realizes he's one of Bones' living-vampires.

Misfire talks to the defense attorney, who states there would need to be some proof, and recuses himself form being part of that, so as not to cause a mistrial. He calls in the rest of the team.

Jacob talks to his sister, who is still recovering at home from her injuries. She'll be back to active duty in a week. She was unfamiliar with the prosecutor, and hadn't heard anything from bones in a while.

Xark and Magic Lad broke into Dante's office and found a necromantic hex to cause people nearby to fail at what they attempt.

Misfire was called to the stand, and did an amazing performance. Stating how Humor was the guilty party and Rabinowitz did the right thing, despite the issues with his son (killed by said neo-nazis). He did even better on cross examining, pushing back and throwing suspicion on dante's character.

Jacob arranges to talk to the DA, Mary Beth Samuels. The DA pulls out files of Bones attempting to get minions in the DA's office. First a zombie from 15 years ago that was detected by the embalming fluid odor. The second was 9 years prior, and was a vampire that only tried night cases. She would be willing to help, but needed proof.

Jacob sat in the courtroom and brainstormed for some thoughts to why.
1) Bones could be positioning a minion into better positions to defend supervillians and similar.
2) A travesty of justice would create energy that could be captured. (Like arresting a father for choosing not to take revenge on those who killed his son.)
3) Being humiliated like this might make Rabinowitz a viable host for Humor again.

Jacob assumes the form of an imp, shapeshifts back into his form, and attempts to detect where a container for the energy might be located. It's somewhere in the judge's chair/witness stand.

Xark andMagic lad break into Dante's house. They find necromantic hexes and trappings that would be incriminating. They also find a bunch of blood. Magic Lad swaps a vial of the stored blood for his own.

With a few quick words to the defense attorney, Jacob was called in as expert witness on Humor. Once at the witness stand he was able to pinpoint the container, and used a demonstration of his truth abilities to warp the panel and reveal a hex-claw (a mummified hand, dipped in wax to grasp the break of justice).
The judge clears the courtroom and demands to know what's going on.
Jacob and Misfire create a verbal trap, and when Xark and Magic Lad arrive, Dante incriminates himself. He is arrested.
"and I would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for you meddling kids and your dog!"
Xark - Scooby, Magic Lad - Shaggy, Jacob - Freddy, Misfire - Daphne, Retrofit - Velma (?)
Misfire manages to catch a glimpse of one of Bone's Shadow-Wolves before it vanishes. Bones saw that Misfire was the reason his plans were dashed.

Epilogue:
The team meet up with Retrofit and congratulate each other... Jacob assumes the form of an archon of Death, and checks the souls of the team.
Retrofit has a proto-soul, like an infant. Magic Lad's soul is part divine. Xark's soul is alien, but relatively normal. Jacob's soul is fae. Mixcoatl (if he arrives for the end bit...) is perfectly normal.
Misfire's soul is mangled, with parts removed.
They don't press Misfire for answers. (unless you guys want to have done that, I know game was ending...)

Issue 6: True Facts About Illarians
(My first draft... my precious first draft!)

Prelude:
May 13th, 2017
Misfire (Random Place, 2:58am EDT): Soul Ring calls, stating he's in trouble. Soul explains he was tracking the alien scouts that escaped, but encountered a soldier caste. A round of plasma blasts cuts the call short.

Main:
Retrofit (Twin Tower Memorial, NYC, 3:01am EDT): Retrofit arrives finding Soul ring in combat with four heavily armed suits of 7' tall power armor. (Very tank-like.) He manages to stun one just before Soul Ring is blasted through a building.

Misfire (Other Side of Building, 3:02am EDT): Soul Ring almost lands on Misfire. The pair (and Retrofit) flee and regroup.

Xark, Jacob, Retrofit, Misfire, Magic Lad, Soul Ring (Manhattan, 3:18am EDT): Soul Ring explains that these aliens aren't from space, but another dimension. There's some planning and discussion as to how to handle the tank-like battle-suits. Retrofit does a brief scout to verify they have dimensional-travel escape pods in their suits.

Jacob electrocuted the suits while Misfire and Xark (copying Misfire) shorted out the dimensional dead-switch, causing two of them to implode. A third was taken out by Soul-Ring and Retrofit comboing a blast. Magic lad stunned the last one. Xark prevented the dead-man's switch from going off (copying the dimensional stabilizer to do so) while the group captured the last Illarian.

Epilogue:
Jacob (NYPD Detention Facility, 8:15am EDT): Drops the alien off at the detention facility. The alien only states his name, rank and serial number. Rasok, Illarian, 3rd lieutenant of advance squadron.

Outside, a crowd of protesters is starting to gather with anti-alien signs.

The next few games were kinda slow...

First: The riot involved aliens in protester suits drumming up violence. Jacob put nazi armbands on them while Misfire beat them up... A second wave of aliens managed to get into the prison and use dimensional beacons to summon a third wave of frog-like aliens. This used grenades that teleported things back to their origin dimension but was beaten back.
Thundercloud and a mysterious black cat assisted in the end.

During clean-up, Angel confirmed what happened with the dimensional distortions and the aliens.

After some talk... giant robots attacked NY harbor (in Long Island Sound). These were pawns of C.H.E.S.S., who used a series of malfunctioning traffic lights to let the group know where he would meet them.

A robot informant there gave them a list of unusual sites. Stating there was a second dimensional invasion being planned. One that assimilated organics. (like the borg.)

One of these places was an abandoned mine near the sound, that was unearth when one of teh giant robots was broken and a peice crushed a waterfront warehouse.

The mine itself was crawling with undead, and the artifact within was being grabbed by Bones. The group beat Bones to the artifact (which really wanted to talk to Jacob).

Outside, Bones has a pack of shadow wolves attack Jacob and the group as well as Jacob's sister and her elite group of police who were there as backup. (also there: Plasto and Revenant.)

2 mini parts

Additional evaluation of the data that CHESS provided revealed there was an extra-dimensional object taken from the base by Tzzkk. Soul Ring arrived and after some conversation the team went to the not-watchtower where the captured roach of Tzzkk is being held. Jacob managed to convince the roach to trade the artifact for not disconnecting the roach from the collective. There was a bit of a discussion about Misfire's soul and soul-grafting.

The team worked on the base. and Shift visited. There were a few scenes of meeting with Retrofit followed by setting up a summoning circle. (Shift has extensive experience as a chthulean investigator.) The battle was short as a series of exceptional bad luck (perhaps plot related?) cause the demons to admit defeat and the artifacts to be banished.

Trouble at the Super Park

A distress call from Thundercloud came in to Xark while he was spending time with Trixie (his cat). The team ran to the location, a superhero theme park in florida. After some light investigation, the team found a massive fight had occurred in the hall of mirrors, showing laser-scorches and lightning bolts.

Entering the hidden elevator, there was secret lab with robotics.
Eventually, the team was trapped in an operating arena where Harhas Zeeb a mysterious figure interrogated them. Up until everyone teleported to the control room (okay, Retrofit ran) and threatened him. Jacob recognized Harhas as Firefang of were-force, who, in this continuity, was active in the 80's... thirty years prior. The aging Harhas agreed to let people find the source of the distress call.

Retrofit made a quick scanner, using the communicator, and revealed that it used extra-dimensional technology (like the zeta-tubes) for communication. Xark realized it wasn't his communicator/collar, but Trixie's.

They located the originating communicator in a series of animal cages. (Which included some of the rat-monkeys from the first issue.) In the incinerator, was a half-dead rat survivor and the communicator. Jacob electrocuted the rat, who absorbed the energy, revealing himself as the true form of Thundercloud. (He used a summoning circle to regenerate his human-shadow-body).

Sometimes during this, Mixcoatl (who was watching Harhas) was jumped by a robot werewolf and Harhas made a break for it. Both were subdued.

This issue has Jacob arguing extensively with both Harhas and Thundercloud about fae magic vs science.
