While a day of preparation might result in slightly stronger protective spells, it would also result in a very cold trail. As such, it's a little under an hour later when Kailyn sets out, with Gregor, Vorel, and Epsilon following invisibly overhead. The trail leads almost straight east, and it quickly becomes clear that these raptors were relying on magical means of avoiding being tracked; they put no effort into hiding their trail by conventional means. The path does, in fact, go through one of the larger lakes in the area - but Kailyn is easily able to pick it up again on the far side. There are no notable encounters* until you're about four-fifths of the way to the edge of the swamp. And then Kailyn staggers under an invisible assault; huge gashes appearing in his sides from the claws of two raptors. Of the raptors themselves, there is no sign - until Epsilon covers the area in illusory magical flame, revealing the distinct outlines of four velociraptors surrounding Kailyn - from the looks of it, all four of them attacked, but only two managed to penetrate the unicorn's armor - and those two nearly killed him on their own. _____ * There are three attacks from normal packs of velociraptors, and one from a giant land squid, but nothing that Kailyn couldn't have handled on his own. |

Gregor will suddenly appear as he concentrates on Kailyn in his mind and intones the ancient word for Allies outloud flicking his wrist just to the right of where he is flying. * Kailyn will appear where he flicked his wrist. Then Gregor will takeout his sword, little blue and yellow lightnings playing up and down the blade & dive directly at the velociraptors. *casted regroup from PHB 2 |

The raptors had, in their assault on Kailyn, rather neglected their own defenses. To be fair, how good you are at dodging blows matters little when your opponent can't see you - but this now leaves them open for Gregor to counterattack with his full strength. A single swing of his falchion cleaves through two of the raptors, and even the glancing hit he lands on the third is about as strong as one of the hits the raptors landed on Kailyn. Vorel follows Gregor's lead, though she doesn't have the raw strength to take full advantage of her opponent's vulnerability - so she can't quite finish off the injured raptor. Still, her claws leave bleeding wounds; even if it runs, it won't get far. Now that you have a moment to examine them at point blank range, it becomes clear that these raptors are not invisible per se - but their scales shimmer and shift to match their surroundings, and they are supernaturally good at being sneaky. Kailyn takes a moment to (mostly) recover from his injuries, burning through his most powerful healing magics to make sure he's able to return to combat immediately. The two surviving raptors scatter, their camouflage adjusting to compensate for their suddenly glowing hide. You're fairly certain you still know more or less where they are - especially the one leaving a bloody trail from its wounds - but that condition is unlikely to last for long. |

Gregor will move to get in one last strike at the wounded one and them go make sure Kailyn is is alive and well. |

A single hit, even with more attention to accuracy than power, is more than enough to finish off the wounded velociraptor. Epsilon flies after the other raptor, circles over the area you last saw it in, and looks up with a puzzled expression. "It's gone? How did it do that?" Kailyn is, by this point, no longer injured - though he's expended most of the healing power he has available today; if he gets hurt like that again, it will take him hours to recover rather than seconds. |

"Possible, but irrelevant. The spell was just to make sure you knew where they were; I could sense* them before I cast it. You don't hide from a dragon. It just doesn't work." _____ * The word Epsilon actually uses here is in draconic. It's a reference to a semi-magical ability that true dragons (among other creatures) have to simply know roughly what their surroundings are, regardless of such petty trivialities as invisibility or cover or impenetrable darkness. |
