Seeing the signal from Maya, Hatcher first notifies Korgin (telepathically, though he is unsure if Korgin is waiting for any larger prey to show up.) Hatcher then attempts to slip away from the festivities to engage the trolls and hill giants. He plans use both lightning breath and (lightning) spells to split the forces into more manageable groups, before engaging the hill giants in melee*.

------------------------------------------

*The hill giants, of course, being more annoying and slightly more prone to collateral damage. Also, by 'engaging them in melee' we mean shapeshifting into a huge blue draconic bear, as I was always told only to pick on things my own size.

After informing the others, Maya smiles and starts on her way, disappearing into the wilderness getting the full details as she does of where they are, any formations, and who seems to be leading them. The hunt begins.

There are a grand total of nine hill giants and fourteen trolls, crashing through the forest in a ragged line towards the wedding. This is not the cleverest of formations to use when facing a lightning breathing opponent, though they seem blissfully unaware of this tactical flaw. Then again, it doesn't look like they lined up deliberately; it's more like they just started jogging and none of them really wanted to be too far behind or too far ahead.

Maya: one of the trolls, more or less in the middle, isn't moving quite right. There doesn't seem to be an explicit leader, though.

Hatcher: That does sound like a fairly nice general plan. Some elaboration on its intended implementation would be appreciated, though.
Korgin seems content to sit where he is, at least for the moment.

Hatcher intends to try to split the formation up by attacking as many things as he can get in his lightning effects, mainly in the middle of the enemy formation. He will target the hill giants a little more discriminatly, as he actually does real damage to them. He's hoping to break their formation so that he can take 3 to 5 of them at a time, as he'd rather not get surrounded. (It tends to be a tad inconvienent.)

Blasting the giants* with lightning, while an effective means of getting them to change formation, doesn't actually break it up much. Indeed, they merely re-orient to try to attack Hatcher. A third of the hill giants and most of the trolls start lumbering towards the source of this annoyance, while the remaining giants hang back a bit and start hurling boulders (and, in one case, a dead sheep).

This, of course, gives Maya's pack a wonderful chance to strike at the now clearly defined rear of the battle. Three white wolves and one pale human dart in and back out; three hill giants fall - from the sounds of their cursing, none too pleased with suddenly discovering fangs sunk into their legs.

A few of the trolls in the front group, perhaps a bit more alert than their companions, turn around to assist the beleaguered giants.
Of the two trolls that had stayed back, one roars and charges at Maya, a wild swing of his club smashing into the ground where she had been standing a moment before.

The other grins and points his club at Fang. A gout of fire explodes from the tip of the weapon, leaving several burning trees and one apparently untouched wolf in its wake.

"That tickled," comments Fang, with a predatory grin of his own.

The troll blinks. "What? Zees eez imposseeble! Winter wolves and fire are like Ogres at a tea party! Nozzeeng eez left but ashes!"

_____
* "Giants" used here as a generic term that encompasses both hill giants and trolls.

Hatcher did not expect trolls to spew fire (or have French accents, for that matter!) Maya and her pack seem to be having no problems, so it comes to the more pressing problem of giants* running at him.

Hatcher did indeed manage to get the number of enemy forces attacking him to be cut in half; though not in the way he had planned. Still, this gives him a good opportunity to allow the remaining forces to get in range, pull a necklace out (complete with symbol of sleep). Assuming at least a 25% reduction in enemy forces, Hatcher will then shift into a huge draconic blue bear. If by some twist of fate, they aren’t in range by his next action, he will remedy this personally.

Fang: "Then I'm the ogre, and you're the tea party."

Maya and pack continue their attacks, focusing on the magic using troll with the very bad accent.

The symbol on Hatcher's necklace glows a pale green, and six trolls and three hill giants slump to the ground, snoring loudly - immediately followed by much cursing and a loud crash as one of the remaining hill giants trips over his suddenly somnolent companions.

This leaves only three trolls and two hill giants charging at you. One of each manage to land what look like solid blows - but the actual damage dealt is fairly minimal and already starting to heal.

Nehmet's voice drifts down from above. "Neat toy you've got there. Do you want any help, or shall I just sit up here and watch?"

*****

On the other side of the battle, two of the fallen giants have managed to recover their feet; the third is still clutching her ankles in pain. A few of the giants are even quick enough on their feet to get some swipes in as Maya's pack goes past. One of these attacks actually lands - though Fang barely seems to notice, let alone care.

The troll, however, is not faring so well. "Pah," he announces, as green smoke pours from his wounds. "Four on one? Cowards! But zees eez not over, oh no. You have not seen ze last of Zee Greet Zambooneey! Zere will bee a reckoning! You weel..."

As the last tendril of smoke detaches from the troll's battered body, he collapses mid rant. A small cloud of suspiciously ogre-mage-shaped green smoke is now drifting slowly up and away.

The surrounding giants and trolls seem largely unconcerned by this turn of events, and gleefully continue pounding away at whatever target is most easily reached. Having learned that yes, you all actually are fairly hard to hit, they do a bit better at landing blows this time - only Kerberos is still uninjured, though none of the damage your pack has taken is serious.

Hatcher, telepathically (bears don’t talk very clearly) mentions “I think I can handle these giants, though I do have a few things you can help with, if you want. For one, I don’t know if that ogre mage should be escaping. Also, I doubt those sleeping giants will wake up, but you can never be too careful.” (from this, one can discern that Hatcher doesn’t much care what happens to the sleeping giants, as long as they are out of the area.)

With that, Hatcher would like to attack some hill giants. Huge reptilian bears hopefully get their way on such matters.

Unsurprisingly, huge reptilian bears do in fact get their way on such matters. The giants, of course, do not approve - but, as before, they aren't able to retaliate effectively. Though two more hill giants are likely to join the melee in a few seconds - the one who tripped, and the one who was tripped over are both busy getting up and recovering their weapons.

Nehmet shrugs. "That's easy enough to deal with." With no further ado than that, the suddenly solid ogre mage drops to the ground with a meaty thud and a very surprised look on his face.

Maya's pack descends on the hapless ogre mage like giant furry piranhas; he won't be getting up again any time soon.

Through the vagaries of fortune, the counterattacks against Maya's pack are overall less effective this time - though Fang has now taken enough hits that some amount of healing would probably be appropriate, and your opponents are seeming a bit more confident.

That confidence lasts all of about two seconds, until Dazzle comes gliding in from the south. Merlin vaults casually down from her back, completely unconcerned by the remaining twenty foot drop. "Oh, good, you saved some for us. Thanks!"
