Continued from Chapter X.

The trip back to the fort is uneventful, and Fierce has recovered by the time you arrive. Your captive is still slowly healing - except for the wound dealt by Mirri's lance.

Mirri reports that, before she got out of sight, the serpents had found and burned the remaining invisible trees. So it seems likely the next conflict will come around mid-day, when the orcs comes in range of the fort. Until then, you have plenty of time to plan and rest and tend to the wounded - this last task made rather easier by Fierce's magic.

Willoughby is weary. Even elves are subject to fatigue, eventually. But there is little time for rest, and much to ponder, and more to plan.

The larger serpents use heat as a weapon, with great effectiveness. They are swift, and powerful, and heal over time. They can create their own food. These things have been discovered, Willoughby thinks. We face a dangerous foe-- but not an invincible one.

Lacking conjured food and imposed order, the orc army will dissipate. The commanders, for lack of a better term, are the key to the defeat of the army.

And what did Cass mean about "the greatest foes arrayed against you"...?

There is also the matter of the captive. If the serpents are truly in telepathic contact with one another, an alert serpent could be a severe liability, able to report from inside its cell. Securing a cell is a difficulty in itself. We will need bars that do not melt, thinks Willoughby.

Musing on this question, Willoughby descends to the unconscious creature, and fixes it with a placid and unblinking stare.

Ametrine arrives, having spent more time 'shaking pursuers' than was probably necessary. "How can I help?" he asks, not sure what preparations are necessary for the upcoming battle.

Willoughby motions Ametrine over to the serpent. "Do you see that, Ametrine?" he asks, pointing at the serpent's wounds with his cane, yet taking great care not to prod it inadvertently. "This... organism appears to possess an odd physiology. Odd in that it is, in some sense, commonplace: it is endowed with a heart, a brain, lungs, and the other usual organs-- but I doubt, from looking at these wounds, that it truly needs any such things to survive. They help, perhaps, but on the whole we witness a creature which is primarily sustained by sorcery. This is quite rare."

Maya and group get what rest and recovery they can before they join up with Cass.

Willoughby tries to find Michael, ensuring that the serpent remains watched by someone capable of handling it.

Upon finding Michael:

"Michael, what news of the questions I instructed to be sent to the manor? and is any jail here capable of holding our captive?

Having thought about their powers, I strongly advise that we defend ourselves by using the catapults to attack the larger serpents from a distance. Stone may be more useful than wood. Should we pursue this course of action, it is imperative that the catapults be strongly defended-- perhaps by archers?"

Ametrine studies the serpent for a minute. "You're right, Mr. Willoughby! This creature is highly magical, probably divine or infernal!" He tags along as Mr. Willoughby finds Michael.

"What about the flying snakes? Do we know if we got all of them? If not, they'll probably head right for the catapults."

(while examining the serpent)

Willoughby blinks. "...divine or infernal...?" he asks himself.

(in the conversation with Michael)

Willoughby nods at Ametrine. "Yes, if there are any left, I'm sure they will head for the catapults. Archers would hopefully prove problematic for them-- although by now they are likely terrified at the sight of you."

It is about mid-morning when the sun finally clears the highest peak visible to the east. Right on schedule - if there's anybody already waiting down there - Cass returns to the kitchen cellar. Though this time she actually uses one of the "secret" passages.
