Unhappy at the sudden change in events, Ametrine rushes up the slope toward the flying serpents, attempting to separate them from the four larger ones and pick them off.

If Fierce succesfully leads them off, Fang and Maya start a run once the serpents move in the wrong direction. If Fierce fails to lead them off, Maya and Fang immediately begin a full run together upon noticing such.

Fierce will disappear once the distraction has taken the proper effect and if not will still disappear then run to join her pack.

The goal is to get to that lance.

Ametrine:
As both the land-bound serpents and the flying ones are going at their own individial top speeds, it's easy enough to swoop in and pick off one of them. The other two split up, dodging inbetween trees and boulders. Alas, this is unlikely to deter you much... but they're trying their best.

Mr. Willoughby:
Over even such a short distance as this, the tunnels can provide a useful shortcut. Such are the advantages of a system installed by sorcerers, to whom the normal limitations of space and distance were mere inconveniences. Now if only they'd chosen to apply the same theories to the distance between the kitchen and the dining room...

Maya:
The serpents seem undistracted by Fierce, moving unerringly after you. They're surprisingly fast, too, at least for being snakes. Perhaps they've boosted their speed with magic? In any case, you can still outrun them, but they're unlikely to be all that far behind.

Nothing much else to do but stay the course as planned.

As Maya arrives, she sees Mr. Willoughby standing gravely, holding Mirri's lance with one hand and pushing open a door in the side of a boulder with the other. "We are here to gather information, Maya, not take on the army itself. I doubt you can win a fight against nine large serpents. Quickly, move inside."

He holds the door open for Ametrine as well, and watches the position of the serpents.

Now to signal Mirri...

After chasing down the last flyer, Ametrine turns his attention to the group of five large serpents. Hoping that his friends aren't watching, he digs his feet into the soil, opens his mouth and releases a blast of a sickly-yellow mist at the serpents, then moves back and waits to see how good the results of it are.

Ametrine:
Three of the serpents seem unaffected. But one turns on its nearest neighbor and attacks with tooth and claw, while a second curls up into a tight little ball on the ground, whimpering slightly.

The other three pause a moment, and then with an exasperated hiss, turn on Ametrine. The first one launches a volley of fire bolts; when those prove completely ineffective, the second two just glare.

Dragging the serpent with her, the pack does as he sais.

Maya as she runs by: "We've got one of them and figured out some of their weaknesses and capabilities. I'd call that information gathering."

Fang: "Would you rather we not know their strength?"

Ametrine flies in a complicated pattern to throw off any followers before returning to Mr. Willoughby and the rock. Not mentioning what has just occured, he starts with, "Is it time to go now, Mr. Willoughby?"

"Yes, I believe we should take our leave, Ametrine. We have done enough." He nods acceptance at Maya, but her passage is too swift for any comment.

Once both Maya and Ametrine are safely in the tunnels, Willoughby allows the door to close, and ponders how to signal Mirri. Moving some distance away from the tunnels, he tries to spot Mirri; if he succeeds, he then uses the brass lantern, with the shutters adjusted to shine outwards only in one direction, to shine three flashes of light in her general direction.
