"Well, Amertine. It seems we can choose to proceed by way of the valley itself, or along the more obscure paths along the mountain ridge. The valley will be wet, and slow. The ridge will be cold, and high. What do you think?" Willoughby pauses for a moment, and then preempts Amertine's reply with "I believe it would be best to take... neither one, actually. Not as such."

Gravely surveying the area, Willoughby opens the largest door, and then glides to the cleanest section of the floor. With his back to Amertine, he begins unrolling a large carpet with an amazing design-- thin ribbons of many colors interlaced and layered in a fantastically complex pattern, with aquamarine, burgundy, and gold being the dominant colors. The carpet unrolled, Willoughby proceeds to sit cross-legged in its center, and beckons Amertine to join him.

"Carpet, would you please adjust yourself upwards?" Willoughby inquires, and the carpet floats about six feet off the floor, tassels rippling slightly. "Ah yes. Forward, if you don't mind." The carpet glides noiselessly out the door, and Willoughby stops briefly to close the door behind him before setting out roughly along the path of the mountain ridge, above the cloud cover.

The carpet moves at an alarming speed.

Ametrine sits on the carpet. "This is fun, Mr. Willoughby! How long until we arrive?" Ametrine takes one opportunity to see if he is faster than the carpet as the travel along.

Magic carpet is, indeed, an excellent and rapid mode of travel. Though not nearly so rapid as a certain small yellow dragon... And the thick cloud cover prevents you from being spotted or attacked by anything - on the ground.

Flying snakes are another story entirely, however. A group of three ash-colored reptiles seem to be flying some kind of patrol pattern - but at the sight of you, they change course, hissing gleefully.

[Assuming Amertine is flying ahead of the carpet presently.]

Willoughby calls out, "Amertine! I can do little from here. I must direct the carpet. It would be best if you could deal with them!"

"Aye-aye, Mr. Willoughby!" Ametrine heads for the closest snake, and prepares to render it incapable of flight. Prominent wings are removed first, and then if that doesn't work, an old-fashioned headbutt.

The serpents do indeed have prominent leathery wings. They also breath fire, which fact they demonstrate long before Ametrine reaches melee range.

However, their flame does not seem to be particularly accurate (at least in comparison to such a nimble little dragon), nor particularly hot, and Ametrine emerges from the attack unscathed, and in perfect position to carry out his original plan.

Removing both wings proves problematic, though, for ripping off the first wing causes the creature to burst into flames and go plummeting into the clouds below.

The other two hiss angrily, and attempt to close on Ametrine, jaws wide, and fangs glistening with poison.

Willoughby notes the serpents' fangs with great alarm.

The carpet is now closing in on an attack vector.

Well, it's trying to, anyway.

Unaware how inflammable the carpet is, Ametrine doubles his resolve to pop the remaining snakes before his friend gets in danger.

Besides, things bursting into flame is what being a dragon is all about.

The serpents ignore Mr. Willoughby for the moment, focusing their attention on the obvious threat of a dragon.

Disarming (diswinging?) a second one isn't much harder than the first, especially since it so conveniently is closing range all on its own. A second snake goes plummeting towards the ground, wreathed in consuming flames.

The third one, much like the zombie hyenas, finds its fangs sliding harmlessly across fine yellow scales - and, with no wound, its poison isn't doing much, either. Finding all of its attacks innefective, it folds its wings and simply drops, attempting to reach the cover of the clouds below.

Willoughby directs the carpet into a stomach-churning dive, one hand holding onto his hat. He can't tell whether the serpents are intelligent enough to carry news about his position, but he can't take the chance of being discovered.

He still has no idea how to stop the serpent, if he can actually catch up to it. And there's very little time left to decide...
