Catching up to the serpent, at least before it reaches cloud cover, does not seem likely; the flying carpet was designed for travel, not aerial acrobatics. Still, you can get close enough to make use of ranged attacks, if nothing else.

Ametrine begins his concurrent pursuit of the third ophidian, hoping to catch it in his talons while flying at top speed.

There are very few things in the world that can outrace a diving dragon - and this serpent is not one of them. It hisses angrily as Ametrine's talons latch into its flesh, and bursts of flame jet from the wounds.

Having no better options, it loops around and tries to bite again - but with no more success than before.

Willoughby aborts the dive, and watches the wounded serpent with interest.

Ametrine attempts to knock it unconscious with a blow to the head, and see if he can bring it back to Mr. Willoughby for his opinion.

Knocking out a writhing snake, even one with wings (which make nice handholds), is not a completely trivial task; it ends up taking two blows, since the first one didn't land quite right.

_____
* It may be of some relevance to note that this particular snake is, in fact, rather larger than Ametrine is; on par with some of the larger constrictor species (excluding dire and monstrous variants). This disparity does not seem to bother the little dragon in the slightest, and the fact that he's now carrying something larger and heavier than himself would only bother an aerodynamicist. As none are present, we will ignore the absurdity of the situation.

Willoughby brings the carpet to a halt as Ametrine brings the unconscious serpent to him. "Well done, Ametrine," he says, with a reserved cheerfulness. "That was superb."

He then turns to examining the winged snake, carefully turning it over in his hands. Several seconds pass before Willoughby reaches a conclusion. "This is really quite fascinating, Ametrine. I don't believe I've ever seen a creature like this before."

Carefully clearing space on the carpet, Willoughby draws a small brown ceramic pot from the interior of his suit jacket, and then slowly pulls a long iron bar from one of its front pockets. Laying the snake along the iron bar, he uses a small paintbrush to coat its underside with a clear, viscous fluid drawn from the pot. He then aligns it along the iron bar.

Willoughby waits for the glue to set. Finally, he ties a thick hemp rope-- seemingly pulled from nowhere, as usual-- around the creature's wings, neatly severing the excess rope with a pair of well-maintained scissors.

"All we need to do now is to ensure that it is pointed away from the carpet, I think."

The remainder of your flight to the north pass is pleasantly disruption-free. The serpent, for its part, remains unconscious for the duration.

End Chapter VIII. Continued in Chapter X.
