"They showed up about four months ago, and have claimed the entire northern city as their hunting grounds - anyone outdoors at night gets killed, and if nobody is outdoors when they go hunting... We've found entire families slaughtered in their homes."

He gets up and gestures at a map hanging on one of the walls. "We think they're based in this warehouse - at least, since they showed up, none of the original workers have turned up, and anyone who goes in there simply doesn't come back."

"As for what we plan on doing with them... I'll be honest with you: I hope it doesn't come to us having to do anything. The two you brought in last night are already free again; apparently they just ripped straight through three inches of reinforced oak door, killed that entire post of guards, and left. I'd prefer it if you simply killed them where they are, and left my men out of it entirely. Just from that one incident, we're going to be understaffed for the rest of the year; I don't want to lose any more guards."

"Do you have any ideas of how many there are?"

"We know there are at least six of them; a few of their earlier attacks had witnesses, before people learned to stay indoors. I would guess there are no more than a dozen of them - though I have no hard evidence to back up that guess."

FROBORR: "Very well," I say. "I shall go look at the werehouse."

"Thank you. And good luck." The seneschal bows politely.

FROBORR: Twill nods, cocks his hat, reaches out his hand so Kitty can clamber up on his shoulder, and strides dramatically from the room.

The servant who escorted you here has apparently moved on to other tasks; the hall is empty.

FROBORR: Twill meanders casually out to the street. There's no rush; he has until lunch to clear them out.

There is a definite sense of tension on the streets that wasn't there yesterday. People are hurrying, just a bit; looking worried...

FROBORR: Twill stops the third-most-harried-looking person he sees. "Pardon me, good sir or madam, but what might the trouble be? Perhaps I can help."

"No time! I'm late already!" And the young man hurries off without a second glance at you.

FROBORR: Very well then. Fifth-most harried it is.

Ah, going after one of the food vendors, who can't run away. ;-)

FROBORR: Excellent.
"Excuse me, good purveyor of comestibles, but what is it that has the townsfolk so disturbed?"

"Disturbed? Have you heard what happened last night? An entire guard post slaughtered! Why, this would never have happened under the old Duke. Back in my day..." The vendor breaks off his tirade to call "Fresh fruit! Juiciest in town!" to a likely-looking potential customer.

FROBORR: I nod knowingly, and buy an apple. I pass it up to Kitty, and head for the warehouse.

On your way north, you head past the same guard post. The door has been broken outwards, and a single nervous-looking guard holds the spectators at bay.

FROBORR: I stop and greet the guard. "I am Twill, humble service of Her Imperial Majesty the Tsarina Ekaterina Alexandrovna Romanova D'vai. I apprehended the wererat miscreants yesterday eve. Perhaps you could tell me aught of what transpired here?"

"You! You're the one who got my friends killed?" He moves to draw his sword, and then apparently realizes just how futile an action that would be. "You want to know what happened?" he spits. "Go take a look for yourself."

FROBORR: "Sir," I say, and look him right in the eye, speaking with total sincerity and conviction, "had I thought there the slightest chance of danger to your compatriots beyond the ordinary call of duty, I would have never left them here. The weight of your comrades' deaths shall remain with me until the day I die. I will never be able to truly repay that debt, but I proceed now to ensure that those wererats never harm anyone again."

The guard seems a bit taken aback, but doesn't say anything more.

FROBORR: I walk into the guardhouse and take a look around.

The interior is fairly thoroughly trashed. Corpses have been removed already, but from the blood stains it's fairly easy to tell where they were.
It's also fairly easy to tell where the were-rats were being held. Two cell doors hang open, damaged beyond repair. Blood stains mark the wall across from one of them.
Oddly enough, though, the damage doesn't seem to have been inflicted entirely from the insides...

FROBORR: Twill is not remotely surprised by this, as wererats are not generally known for their ability to claw through steel bars.

The doors were mostly wood; there's been enough damage done that an uneducated observer would assume they had simply busted out. Given the actual damage, though, it looks more like someone opened one of the doors, and then tried to make it look like they hadn't...

FROBORR: "Intriguing, Kitty," I say. "The question is, did the person who opened the door kill the guards, or did the wererats? In the former case, he was known to the guards or able to persuade them somehow. In the latter, that is not necessarily so."
Twill unaccountably fails to light a pipe at this point.

Kitty remains perched on your shoulder, apparently unperterbed.

FROBORR: I resume my journey to the warehouse.
