Unless you are a member of certain circles, it's very unlikely you have heard the name of Eton Willoughby. This is hardly surprising, as few bards sing of legendary feats of butlering. Willoughby is the elven head butler of the Greywind estate, and the valet of the Lady Eleanor Greywind. His adventuring days drew to a close long ago, and he has presently been serving the Greywind family for three generations— a pedigree which has earned him the sobriquet of "the Eternal Valet" among some other members of the staff, who find his effortlessly flawless technique unnerving. Willoughby has thoroughly mastered the art of serving. His movement is a silent, flowing glide; his diction is economical, precise, and formal; his presence is never obtrusive; his sense of dignity and manners never falters. The Lady Greywind has been heard to remark that Willoughby possesses an uncanny ability to fulfill other peoples' desires prior to their having quite realized what those desires were— "by the time you know what you want for dinner, he's probably already made it." After so many years as a servant, a servant's reserved and inexpressive demeanor seems to have become an ineradicable part of Willoughby's personality, and it is famously difficult to persuade him to reveal any details about his personal life or past adventures. Being elven, Willoughby is thin and short by human standards; humans might also consider his shoulder-length silver-white hair to be somewhat unusual. Willoughby always wears a seemingly freshly-pressed, spotless black suit with moderately long coattails. To complement this, he adds a burgundy vest, white shirt, long white gloves, and bowler hat. He is never encountered without a brass pocketwatch, which he claims is an invaluable tool for the administration of the Greywind estate, and he is sometimes seen wearing a monocle in his weak right eye. While traveling or perusing the grounds, he usually walks with a slim black cane. Some members of the staff claim that there is more to the Eternal Valet than meets the eye. Many state that he seems to possess eyes in the back of his head. Others aver that he has performed feats of catering which should be literally impossible without some extraordinary type of magical assistance. It is relatively well-known that Willoughby has turned down job offers from other estates that promised compensation far in excess of anything that the Greywinds could afford. A few members of the cleaning staff delight in telling tales of the dark and terrible powers the head butler once wielded, decades ago, but only the excessively credulous listen to them. |
