More to the point:
The Pattern is deadlier than an extended vaccing. Especially since Dworkin doesn't tell people not to step off the Pattern (which instantly annihilates you) or stop (you can't rest on the pattern, it continually drains your reserves), and it takes a similar feat of endurance to survive. Again, you must be amber ranked or higher to survive, which assumes you don't stop to rest or step off the pattern. There's also a belief (which may or may not be true) that you need the potential to walk the pattern as well. (For example, members of the Courts of Chaos will likely burst into flames just from touching the pattern.)
For your "average" person in the city, it is a death sentence. It is possible one, maybe two, people in the entire city have the potential to survive. And since he already walked the pattern... most peoples' chances are not good.
